Following the BBC Radio 6 Music and KEXP-supported singles ‘Flume’, ‘Disobey’ and ‘Tae The Moon’, Glasgow psych rock outfit Helicon are unleashing their new single ‘Heliconia’ ft Lavinia Blackwall on vocals and a string quartet. ‘Heliconia’ is lifted from their new ‘God Intentions’ LP. Released 28th April on Fuzz Club, Helicon’s third studio album is their most ambitious album to date – the band bringing a group of collaborators into the fold for the first time.
Arriving off the back of their 2020 ‘This Can Only Lead To Chaos’ album, ‘God Intentions’ was recorded at Dystopia, Glasgow with producers Luigi Pasquini and Jason Shaw, mastered by RIDE’s Mark Gardener and includes contributions from the Rhona MacFarlane String Quartet, Lavinia
Blackwall (Trembling Bells), Mark O’Donnell (Tomorrow Syndicate), Sotho Houle (French avant- garde violinist) and Anna McCracken.
Talking about the new record, vocalist/guitarist John-Paul Hughes says: “‘God Intentions’ is inspired by my brother Gary’s story and a few other influences. It’s a journey through regret, redemption and resurrection. Our familiar darkness is there, but the record carries a fresh and uplifting positivity. I had a clear idea of how I wanted it to sound and feel long before it began. We’re so pleased we achieved it. We managed to hold true to the idea whilst allowing the string quartet, Sotho, Lavinia, Anna, Mark, Jason, Luigi and other collaborators the space to put their mark on it. The album art, by San Francisco based collage artist Nina Theda Black, captures the depth and breadth of themes and sounds we brought together to create a kind of motion in your mind.”
On the ‘Heliconia’ track, backed by a visualiser also released today, Hughes adds: „Heliconia encompasses every element of this record and the Helicon sound in one song. It’s named after the tropical flowering plant because it blossoms and evolves from stripped-back pizzicatos and sitar, through lush strings arrangement and meandering guitar lines to a full-band banger. As Lavinia’s vocals kick-in for the second half, it rockets the song to another planet. It’s ridiculously good fun to play and I hope people get that same buzz when they hear it.“
